CIRCI - Circular industry
Introducing circular economy into industrial processes
Working together for a green, competitive and inclusive Evrope
The complexity of supply chains and the disruption of material flows due to global shortages of raw materials and the impact of pandemics is a situation that needs to be addressed with concrete proposals and actions to achieve the desired green objectives. The CIRCI project addresses the reduction of material flows of virgin materials and energy in the production process, and our aim is to establish a database that will record waste or secondary materials generated in production processes that can be converted into important raw materials for another industry or production process in the circular economy business process.
Together with partners we will introduce an innovative voucher system to enable companies and research institutions to introduce innovative processes or technologies into their business. The total value of the project is EUR 696,960.00, funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism under the 2014-2020-2021 programme and the Slovenian Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy.
Why is the project necessary?
Slovenia has a number of strategic documents and projects in the area of the transition to a circular economy. At EU level, there are also many initiatives in the pipeline that will accelerate the transition to a green, digitised and competitive Europe. However, we are seeing an increasing need from businesses (due to economic, political and global pressures) for concrete proposals to actually implement the circular economy into existing business processes. The complexity of supply chains and the disruption of material flows due to global shortages of raw materials and the effects of pandemics is a situation that needs to be addressed with concrete proposals and actions to achieve the desired green objectives.
Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) is the largest independent, voluntary, non-profit association of companies in Slovenia.
The Electronic and Electrical Engineering Association at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia is the largest representative chamber of the Slovenian electrical industry, bringing together 160 companies whose main activity is the production of electronic and electrical products and related services. The members of the Chamber of Electronic and Electrical Industries generate 2/3 of all revenues in the electronics industry and 53.35% of the added value of the entire industry.

TECOS – Slovenian Tool and Die Development Centre
TECOS, the Toolmaking Development Centre of Slovenia, was founded in 1994 and is one of the more experienced development centres. The mission of TECOS is to support the manufacturing sector in the development of new solutions, technologies, testing and production of these solutions, optimization of production and transition to a green and digital economy.
TECOS has over 20 employees, including 5 PhD students and 7 MSc students. It has an environment for testing green solutions (software and physical equipment - 3D scanners, printers, etc.).

The Eydecluster is a network of approximately 80 companies from the Norwegian process industries and the R&I system around them. The cluster works with the green transitions through circular economy strategies, digital technologies and training and education.
Recently the cluster was tasked by the Norwegian Government to map out the national Process Industries Side-streams from their production processes. Together with some key Norwegian partners this project has been completed and the results are compiled in a digital database to facilitate regularly updated data and easy sharing across partnerships, enabling innovations based on the mapped resources.

CIRCI Kick of meeting
The CIRCI Kick-of meeting was held in June 2022 and was organized by the lead partner Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The event was organized as a hybrid event - Norway partners attended on-line and Slovenian partners in person at the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Association.
First live Workshop
The first CIRCI live Workshop was held by the CIRCI consortium in Kristiansand, Norway in September 2022. The Workshop was led by the Norwegian company Bouvet ASA and EYDE cluster. The aim of the Workshop was to present the Norwegian Database and knowledge transfer to Slovenian partners.
CIRCI Study visit in Norway
CIRCI project partners visited Elkem ASA and ReSiTec AS as part of the Study visit in the larger Kristiansand area in Norway in September 2022. Both facilities work with sidestreams and creating value based on research and testing, both small and up to industrial scale.
Presentation of CIRCI project at Materials event
Dr. Bojan Podgornik presented the CIRCI project at the annual event SRIP MATPRO in Portorož, Slovenia, attended by over 100 attendees.
Presentation of project in the magazine "Glas gospodarstva"
CIRCI project was featured in the fall edition of Glas gospodarstva, published by Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia - on the topic of digital and green transition.
Are you interested in cooperation?
We invite you to join us in the first phase - the preparation of the database and in the next phase in the preparation of the voucher applications.
