Activities of Republic of Srpska in relation to World Food Day

(16-17 October 2022)

1. Panel Conference

On the occasion of World Food Day, a panel-conference was held at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Republika Srpska with the participation of experts and relevant institutions for whom the production and proper use of wheat and wheat products is a narrow specialty. This year's motto of World Food Day was "Let's not forget anyone", with emphasis on activities aimed at better production, better nutrition, better living environment, better life. This motto was chosen to show that it is a sustainable world, a world in which we need to count on everyone's support and include everyone - governments, private sector, academia and civil society must work together and stand in solidarity to prioritize safety food, peace and equality for all. National Coordinator for Food and Nutrition of Republika Srpska, Dragana Stojisavljevic pointed out in her address to journalists before the conference that today's panel conference includes a multisectoral approach in solving security problems, to degrees and equality in access to food, but it is also necessary to pay attention to food production, but also on food that remains as waste, which can affect the quality of life, climate change and health in general. Health is not the responsibility of only one Ministry of Health, but it should be the responsibility of every stakeholder, or the whole social community, concluded Stojisavljevic. Academic Novo Pržulj said that it is necessary to treat natural resources in a domestic way - water, forest and land, so that they would not depend on anyone and how those resources would last for a long time. Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina have potentials for the cultivation of domestic and organic food, and it is necessary to devote as much as possible to the nurturing and development of domestic resources and return to the sustainable use of natural resources to increase the quality of nutrition, he pointed out. Pržulj added that land is an extremely important resource, because everything comes from it, and we have to nurture it and grow it, and not just use it. He noted that it is necessary to return to indigenous varieties and genetic resources, namely soil nurturing and enrichment, in order to preserve a healthy environment. It is important to return to the sustainable use of natural resources, and it is necessary to find a compromise between quality and quantity, Pržulj emphasized. Representative of the Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Brenjo said that it is necessary to develop more awareness of the importance of local producers and domestic food cultivation. Awareness of this importance has grown in Republika Srpska in recent years, but there is still room for progress. It is important to promote that as much as possible, and to know that not everything that is imported is of better quality, but even in most cases it is the opposite, said Brenjo. According to his words, the main motto is "Let's not forget anyone", which means that quantity, production and the environment must be taken care of, as well as neighbors, as well as keeping in mind that there is one life and one planet. The panel-conference was organized by the Institute of Public Health and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Republika Srpska.
